Mahathir and the future direction of Islam in Malaysia

Public outrage over the 1MDB scandal and other alleged instances of abuse of power has been widely cited as having contributed to the downfall of the Najib Razak government in the general election.

What's less explored is the issue of how Muslims view the former government's policies on religious issues. Following from that is the question of how the state's stance on Islam will change, shaped as it will be by ground sentiments and the views of the new leadership.
