One Christmas I received a card at work. It was unsigned. The sender wrote that they had seen me recently and complimented me on the dress I had been wearing – and my pregnancy.

My excitement at getting a handwritten note turned into horror and shame. I wasn’t pregnant, just fat, a point that the sender wanted to make me conscious of.
