Ling Xiao, S.K. Poon and the local Chinese pop singers of yesteryear we should not forget

When we think of local Chinese singers who have earned regional acclaim, Stefanie Sun or JJ Lin would likely be top of mind. But it was “old songs” and veteran singers who paved their way.

Some called him Singapore’s Cliff Richard or Barry Manilow. 

Others crowned Ling Xiao, who got his big break after finishing second in a singing contest held by the Rediffusion radio service as a teen in 1967, as the youthful king of songs.
