The US Senate used to be known as the world's greatest deliberative body. On Thursday, it shredded most of what remains of that reputation.
The spectacle came in two parts. In the first, Ms Rachel Mitchell, a sexual crimes prosecutor hired by Republicans, questioned Dr Christine Blasey Ford on her 36-year-old sexual assault allegation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
