Israel lives up to its reputation for its imperious border controls. I encountered it first-hand last month in Bangkok, where I was in transit to Tel Aviv.

Any romantic notion of the land of the Bible I had faded away after more than one hour of questioning and luggage inspection. A letter I was carrying from the Israeli embassy in Singapore explaining the purpose of my visit - to attend a cyber security conference - did not help.
