As US President Donald Trump approaches the second year of his presidency, significant news acreage has been expended in speculating about his potential successors – both to the Make America Great Again (MAGA) base and the Republican Party nomination for the 2028 presidential race.
A recent op-ed in these pages named congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Green, Vice-President J.D. Vance and Texas Governor George Abbott as the key figures to watch, with former talk show host Tucker Carlson also mentioned as a dark horse. Others bring in names such as former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, Texas Senator Ted Cruz and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
