SYDNEY - For decades, Australia was seen as a world leader in combating tobacco use after adopting a series of moves that spectacularly curbed smoking rates.
These included a 1997 campaign featuring graphic television advertisements that followed the path of smoke as it was inhaled and entered the lungs, which was credited with helping to reduce smoking rates by 4 percentage points in five years.
