For years, Singapore’s housing market seemed to move in only one direction: up. For home owners, it was a windfall. Rising property values boosted household wealth and reinforced the idea that buying a home was one of the safest financial decisions a family could make.

For aspiring buyers, however, the same boom became an increasingly expensive barrier to entry.
