Most United States presidents in recent memory entered the White House determined to avoid Middle East entanglements. And most of them failed, ending up being sucked even deeper into managing Middle Eastern crises.

President Joe Biden was more determined on this score than all his predecessors. He came to power vowing to treat Saudi Arabia, particularly Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, as an international pariah because of Saudi involvement in the assassination of a journalist.
