I was moved by The Christians, a Wild Rice production I attended recently.

Two moments stood out. One was Associate Pastor Joshua recounting the anguish of watching his mother die without embracing the faith. The other was Elizabeth telling her husband, Pastor Paul, that she could not be with him as they no longer believed the same thing. Both scenes lingered long after the performance.

The Wild Rice production had a brilliant cast that acted and sang magnificently. Under Glen Goei’s direction, the actors were given space to explore the complexities of disillusionment, disloyalty and despair.

The Christians created rare space for difficult questions to be asked and felt, and for thoughtful reflection on belief, community and the tensions within both.
