The upcoming construction of the Cross Island Line and the Pasir Ris Integrated Transport Hub marks a significant milestone in the town’s urban renewal.

However, providing safe, comfortable and all-weather daily commutes amid worsening climate change is the true measure of people-centric urban planning.

As an HDB resident at Elias View, I have seen how foot traffic in the town centre is heavily concentrated around the immediate station area at Pasir Ris MRT station. Due to a lack of direct underground linkways, crowds cannot flow smoothly to nearby lifestyle, sports and dining hubs.

I hope the authorities can proactively design a dual-layered walking system for Pasir Ris: an underground pedestrian core connecting to comprehensive, above-ground sheltered pathways.

Our planners can draw inspiration from the Orchard Road underpass network and the successful integration of MRT stations, malls and community hubs in neighbouring Punggol Town.

An underground network connecting the MRT station to sports centres, hawker centres and Pasir Ris Park will ensure uninterrupted foot traffic that boosts local businesses and provide a seamless, vehicular-free space for young families and seniors.
