I am concerned about the slow pace of transitioning public transport vehicles to electric models in Singapore ( LTA to add 660 more electric buses to Singapore’s public bus fleet by 2027,
It is disappointing to see that while many countries have already made significant strides in electrifying their buses, taxis, trains and other public transport, Singapore – a developed nation – continues to fall behind.
Electric public transport is not just a modern necessity – it is an environmental and economic imperative. It significantly reduces noise pollution, lowers maintenance costs and, most importantly, cuts carbon emissions that contribute to climate change.
The benefits of electric transportation far outweigh any initial investment costs, as demonstrated by nations that have successfully implemented such systems.
I urge the Government to prioritise this transition. Instead of delaying, we should be at the forefront of sustainable innovation, setting an example for others.
Our country deserves cleaner air, quieter streets and a future where public transport is aligned with global environmental goals.
I hope this issue will be taken seriously and that concrete steps will be made towards full electrification of our public transport system. The longer we delay, the further we fall behind in our responsibility to protect the environment and enhance public well-being.
