Forum: Roadworks coordinated to minimise disruption

We refer to Phang Phui Leng’s letter “Concern over extensive roadworks across Singapore” (Sept 4). We understand that roadworks can be inconvenient, especially when multiple roadworks projects take place within the same area.
Roadworks are often needed to support essential infrastructure upgrades, utility renewal, maintenance and improvement works. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) works closely with agencies, utility providers and contractors to coordinate the timing and implementation of roadworks to minimise inconvenience. This helps to reduce repeated road openings and minimise disruption to residents and road users.
However, it may not always be possible to avoid overlapping works entirely. Some works are extensive and require the same stretch of road to be excavated multiple times, while unplanned works, such as emergency repairs or urgent utility connections, may also arise.
We also recognise the writer’s concerns about the impact of roadworks on motorists and pedestrians. LTA has regulations in place to ensure that contractors implement appropriate traffic management measures and maintain safe access for all road users throughout the works. LTA conducts regular checks and will take enforcement action where safety requirements are not met.
LTA will continue to work with agencies and utility service providers to coordinate roadworks and minimise inconvenience to residents and road users, while ensuring that necessary infrastructure improvements can be completed safely and in a timely manner.
We also wish to assure the writer that agencies are aware of and coordinating the ongoing works at Sunrise Villa and in its vicinity that were referred to in her letter. They are part of the Ministry of National Development’s Estate Upgrading Programme, which aims to enhance the living environment of older private estates by improving public accessibility, connectivity and recreational facilities.
