I refer to the report “ 68 S’pore writers sign statement criticising NLB’s ‘uncritical endorsement’ of generative AI”
As a writer, I do feel that it is unfair to the literary community that NLB is promoting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to the public, especially the young. It may impede their intellectual development and skew their perception of what writing is all about.
Being able to write well is a lifelong commitment that writers choose to embark on. More often than not, they pursue their passion on top of their full-time jobs. Writers should not be met with barriers that stifle the years of hard work and dedication that they have put in to create high-quality works of literature.
I understand that AI is here to stay. However, I do hope that the authorities will look more closely at regulating AI to ensure that it does not do more harm than good.
