The future of Maju Forest and Gillman Forest has prompted residents to participate actively in discussions about housing, nature and the places they call home.
As a Telok Blangah resident, I welcome the Government’s engagement with nature groups, green groups and young people. Residents should also have an opportunity to review revised planning options while their feedback can still influence the outcome.
On Sept 1, Gillman residents presented the Better Plan to government agencies. Drawing on professional expertise and local knowledge, the proposal sought to meet housing needs while retaining the forest. We appreciated the constructive discussion.
Having learnt of recent consultations with other stakeholders, we have sought clarification on whether residents will be invited to consider the revised options before they are finalised.
An earlier dialogue on an initial proposal cannot substitute for consultation on materially revised options. Meaningful participation requires access to relevant information, time to understand the trade-offs, and an explanation of how residents’ alternatives have been assessed.
Residents contribute knowledge of the paths people walk, the shade they rely on, and the relationships between nature, heritage and community life. This complements the expertise of planners and environmental specialists.
For both Maju Forest and Gillman Forest, could the agencies clarify the next steps for resident engagement and ensure that affected communities can respond before revised plans are settled and announced?
The growing civic participation around these forests is an opportunity to strengthen planning through collaboration. A transparent and inclusive process would improve both the eventual plans and public confidence in how decisions are made.
