Forum: Kenneth Jeyaretnam never shied away from expressing his views

My deepest condolences go to the family, friends and loved ones of Kenneth Jeyaretnam (Reform Party leader Kenneth Jeyaretnam dies, aged 67, July 19).
Although I disagreed with many of his political positions, I believe it is only fair to acknowledge the role he played in Singapore’s public discourse over the years.
Following the death of his father J.B. Jeyaretnam, he chose to continue what he saw as his father’s lifelong mission of advocating greater political pluralism, and stronger checks and balances.
That was not an easy path. Entering politics as the son of one of Singapore’s most prominent opposition figures inevitably brought comparisons, high expectations and intense public scrutiny. Yet, he stepped forward, led the Reform Party, contested elections and remained committed to the causes he believed in despite repeated electoral setbacks.
Jeyaretnam never shied away from expressing his views. While I often disagreed with his arguments or found his conclusions unconvincing, I respected his willingness to ask difficult questions and challenge conventional thinking.
Jeyaretnam’s legacy should not be judged solely by election results. He contributed to an ongoing conversation about governance, accountability, and the relationship between citizens and the state.
At moments like this, political differences should give way to our shared humanity. May he rest in peace.
