Forum: Give Chinatown pedestrian bridge a splash of colour

The covered pedestrian overhead bridge linking Chinatown Point and People’s Park Centre serves an important practical purpose, but its largely grey and utilitarian appearance seems a missed opportunity in one of Singapore’s most distinctive historic precincts.
Could we give it a splash of colour?
A thoughtfully designed treatment using vibrant but complementary colours on the bridge’s pillars, walls and overhead structural elements could turn an otherwise ordinary passage into a brighter and more welcoming connection.
This need not involve major structural alterations or costly installations. The existing surfaces themselves can provide the canvas. More importantly, such an enhancement could contribute to the identity of Chinatown. We devote considerable attention to making our heritage precincts attractive at street level. Pedestrian infrastructure within these precincts can also contribute to that sense of place rather than being regarded as purely functional.
Sometimes, a little colour is all it takes to turn a place we merely walk through into a place we remember.
