Supermarket chains should be applauded for supporting the Government’s efforts to ease the cost-of-living pressures faced by Singaporeans (Supermarket chains roll out CDC voucher promotions to help shoppers stretch their dollar, June 11). However, such support could be offered over a longer period.

For example, Giant and Cold Storage gave a $6 return voucher for every $60 spent using CDC or SG60 vouchers in a single receipt. But the promotion was until June 17, just one week after the CDC vouchers were issued, and the return vouchers must be redeemed by June 25.

Shoppers may feel pressured to spend more within a short time, which may lead to unnecessary or unwise purchases. In fact, to cope with the cost of living, many households are under pressure to save. Given that CDC vouchers are valid until Dec 31, 2027, it raises the question of why shoppers should be rushed into making purchases so soon. Extending both the promotional and redemption periods would let households plan their spending more prudently while still enjoying much-needed savings.
