I refer to the recent news report “SingPost, The Straits Times launch Singapore’s first stamps with changing images” (Sept 23). I applaud this collaboration to mark World Post Day on Oct 9 through the first-ever stamp collection featuring lenticular effects (right).
I believe that traditional postal services still play an important part in nation-building. When I was a teenager, I used to collect stamps from around Asia from pen pals in the region. My pen pals and I often exchanged letters and photographs of interest. I also exchanged festive greeting cards with my relatives and friends in Singapore and Malaysia.
I hope that Singapore Post will work with educational institutions, libraries and other organisations to encourage Singaporeans, especially the young, to embark on the traditional way of communication with their family and friends.
It would also encourage us to improve our handwriting and language skills, instead of relying on our mobile phones and other gadgets.
