We refer to Desmond Gin Wei Guang’s suggestions on adult vaccination (Do more to raise awareness of recommended adult vaccinations, Aug 28).
Vaccination is indeed an important preventive health measure for protecting against vaccine-preventable diseases, and reducing the risk of severe disease, especially among medically vulnerable adults and seniors.
In Singapore, adults aged 18 and above may refer to the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS) for vaccination recommendations. Developed in consultation with the Expert Committee on Immunisation, it provides guidance on recommended vaccinations against 12 vaccine-preventable diseases such as influenza, pneumococcal disease and shingles.
Singapore citizens eligible under the NAIS can receive subsidies at Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) GP clinics and polyclinics, while eligible permanent residents can receive subsidies at polyclinics. More information on the NAIS can be found on the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) website (go.gov.sg/
cda-vaccination).
With Healthier SG, access to vaccinations has also been made easier. Enrolled residents receive personalised vaccination recommendations as part of their health plan consultations, and the clinic they are enrolled with can facilitate their vaccination appointments.
Besides facilitating access through healthcare providers, letters and SMSes are also sent to elderly residents to remind them of their vaccinations.
The CDA will continue to expand public education and outreach efforts to raise awareness of the nationally recommended vaccinations.
We encourage those who need further advice on vaccines that are recommended for their age group or health condition to speak with their doctor.
