Recent fire incidents allegedly involving personal mobility devices and items stored along HDB public staircases and corridors are concerning. Common corridors and stairwells are vital escape routes during emergencies. When residents use these spaces as storage areas for personal items or mobility vehicles, they create fire hazards and obstructions for occupants trying to evacuate and firefighters carrying out rescue operations.
I have previously written to my town council and MP highlighting these risks. The current approach relies heavily on advisory notes and gentle reminders, which are easy to ignore. Without decisive enforcement, advisories are ineffective in deterring such hazardous behaviour.
I urge the Housing Board and the relevant authorities to consider strictly enforcing a total ban on residents placing personal belongings outside their units, accompanied by clear penalties and prompt removal of illegal items.
