We thank K.B. Ryan Joshua Mahindapala for his suggestion to commemorate the history of the conserved buildings in Chitty Road and Veerasamy Road (Install heritage marker in Chitty Road to remember site’s history, Aug 17).

The Urban Redevelopment Authority launched the conserved pre-war buildings in Chitty Road and Veerasamy Road for sale for residential use, and awarded the site to the successful tenderer on Aug 7. Located within the Little India Historic District, this cluster of 18 two-storey terraced houses was constructed in 1927 as municipal quarters for government employees.

We agree that heritage interpretation plays an important role in enhancing appreciation of Singapore’s built heritage. Beyond the physical retention of buildings, heritage interpretation sustains the stories and memories that give meaning to these places, keeping heritage relevant to contemporary life.

As part of the redevelopment, the successful tenderer will be required to incorporate suitable heritage interpretation elements to commemorate the history and significance of the former municipal quarters. These may take various forms such as digital documentation, storyboards, creative installations and walking trails. The specific proposal will be developed as part of the detailed plans for the site to help residents and visitors better appreciate its heritage.

Through meaningful adaptive reuse and heritage interpretation, these buildings will continue to contribute to the distinctive character of Little India as a lively mixed-use precinct in a vibrant cultural setting.

URA will continue to work closely with the community, heritage stakeholders and other agencies to find meaningful ways to celebrate and share the stories of our built heritage.
