I was disappointed to hear about recent criticism directed at the owners of the thrift store Fairies Aisle over their colourful pink and green hair.
While colourful hair may not appeal to everyone, a person’s appearance does not determine their character, values or contributions to society.
In major global cities, people confidently express themselves through their hairstyles and unique outfits.
A city is not made interesting only by its buildings and infrastructure, but also by the people who inhabit it.
Singapore’s strengths have always been its efficiency, safety and organisation, but our society should also have room for creativity, spontaneity and self-expression.
A more expressive Singapore would not be a less disciplined one; it would simply be a more vibrant, interesting and welcoming place for everyone.
