For many songbird enthusiasts, especially the seniors, a songbird is more than a hobby. It is a treasured companion, a source of comfort, and a reason to step out, stay active and connect with friends.
Yet, many cannot attend bird gatherings because they depend on public transport.
I urge the authorities to consider allowing songbirds on buses and MRT trains if they are carried in small, covered cages and remain under the owner’s control throughout the journey.
This would help many, especially the seniors, remain socially connected while preserving a unique tradition that has brought joy to generations of Singaporeans. As we promote active ageing and build a more inclusive society, let us not overlook the small things that give people a semblance of purpose and belonging.
Sometimes, a songbird carries more than just a song. It carries friendship, companionship and a reason to keep living life to the fullest.
