The growing acceptance of AI-generated films in Singapore’s cinema landscape is concerning (AI short film by Singapore-based studio shows National Day Parade under zombie attack, Aug 6).
What worries me is the precedent being set when AI-generated productions can obtain theatrical exhibition alongside films created through months of human effort. If producing a film increasingly becomes a matter of passing instructions to a machine, what will happen to the next generation of Singaporean creatives?
Singapore has a pool of talented actors, film-makers, animators, artists, writers, production crew and background performers. These are people who spend years honing their craft.
An actor may spend years working small roles; an artist may spend countless hours learning to draw; a film-maker may devote months or years to bringing a story to life.
If fewer productions require human actors, artists and crew, where will tomorrow’s talent gain the experience needed to build their careers?
Technology should help Singapore’s artists tell better stories, not make them unnecessary.
