Forum: Framework for additional dental certification should demonstrate clear benefits

Recent public discussion on dental treatment costs in Singapore and cross-border dental care has raised important questions about professional standards, treatment choices and the rising cost of dental services.
The Singapore Dental Association (SDA) recognises these concerns and acknowledges government initiatives that help Singaporeans manage dental expenses. It also recognises that dentists graduate from different universities but are held to the same professional regulations and minimum acceptable standards. Clinical competence should be judged by professional standards, ethical conduct and clinical outcomes.
Against this backdrop, the Singapore Dental Council’s proposed Certificate of Competency framework for wisdom tooth surgery raises concerns about additional costs, particularly if experienced practitioners are expected to undergo accreditation despite years of established clinical practice.
Accreditation involves training, assessments, administrative requirements and time away from clinical practice. These impose additional costs on dental practices, which may ultimately be passed on to patients.
Furthermore, should additional requirements discourage experienced practitioners from continuing to provide wisdom tooth surgery, reduced treatment options could place further upward pressure on fees. While SDA supports initiatives that strengthen professional standards, additional certification should demonstrate clear benefits that justify its financial and administrative burden.
We believe structured voluntary training, mentorship, peer review and evidence-based clinical guidelines offer constructive alternatives that promote professional development and strengthen patient safety.
With rising costs, any additional regulatory requirements should be carefully evaluated for their impact on treatment costs and accessibility.
