As the US goes about marshalling regional allies against China, two recent public opinion polls show money does not necessarily buy you trust.

Just over a year ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for China to build a more "credible, lovable, respectable" image. China's foreign ties were deteriorating, and the top Chinese leader wanted Beijing to make more friends.

But recent polls show that China has not made much headway, especially so in its immediate neighbourhood.
