Wrong to assume Beijing has been caught off-guard by Trump trade war

The escalating trade war between China and the United States is just the opening salvo of what is, in effect, an epochal struggle for strategic dominance.

On the one side is a coterie of US-led Western nations which see China as a growing threat to their dominance of the existing world order. Their clear, if not publicly admitted, goal is to contain China's seemingly inexorable rise.
