When my parents moved into their four-room Housing Board (HDB) flat in the fledgling town of Yishun three decades ago, they got to know other young couples and families in their estate through casual encounters in and around the block.
These encounters later led to them forging fast friendships with a few families, whose children then became friends with my brother and me after we were born.
