More changes are afoot in how Indonesian island is run amid faltering growth

Over the past two years, the former exporting centre of Batam has had to deal with slowing growth and declining investment.

Indeed, in 2016 and last year, the island - a stone's throw from Singapore - registered a mere 2 per cent growth rate, substantially under Indonesia's average of 5 to 6 per cent.
