As China-US rivalry intensifies, Xi seeks stronger ties with Pyongyang

It is probably no coincidence that Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit to North Korea took place a week before his bilateral meeting today with his United States counterpart Donald Trump on the sidelines of the Group of 20 Summit.

North Korea - and the role China can perform in efforts to get Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons - is a card that Beijing can play in its ongoing trade war with the United States that is set to intensify if the two leaders cannot find a way forward.
