More closely integrating the economies of Singapore and Johor has long been a dream of politicians and businesses from both sides of the Causeway.

Various commentators have talked of Johor being “Malaysia’s Shenzhen”, a reference to the southern Chinese city that was transformed from a fishing village to an economic powerhouse within a generation, helped by its proximity to Hong Kong.
