Islamophobia: An irrational fear that has fed violence
Islamophobia divides societies, but as Christchurch shows, it can and has to be challenged
The term Islamophobia first appeared in the pages of this newspaper 21 years ago, in December 1997, in an article titled, "World faces a resurgent Islam".
The piece, first published in The Sunday Times of London, was written after 62 people were killed at a tourist spot in Luxor, Egypt, by an Islamist militant group. It looked at how Islam has long been associated with violence - unfairly and sometimes out of proportion.
