The week began with what appeared to be a significant European diplomatic triumph. The presidents of France and Finland, as well as the leaders of Britain, Germany and Italy and the heads of the European Union and Nato military alliance, flew to Washington to persuade US President Donald Trump
Mr Trump appeared to agree with them that, when the war in Ukraine stops, the US should join the Europeans in providing the Ukrainians with security guarantees, something he never previously considered.
