Two national men's records were toppled on the first day of the senior events at the Singapura Finance 46th Singapore National Age Group Championships (SNAG), sparking hope among fans that there will be more to follow in the coming days at the OCBC Aquatic Centre.

National swimmer Quah Zheng Wen of Swimfast Aquatic Club broke the men's 100m backstroke national record when he clocked 55.86 seconds on Tuesday, eclipsing his previous mark of 55.99 set during the same championships last year.

This was followed by the heroics of 18-year-old Christopher Cheong, who clocked 2min 16.70sec in the men's 200m breaststroke.

The Singapore Swimming Club representative broke Lionel Khoo's national record by 0.99sec, which had been held by the Swimfast athlete for exactly three years.

Lionel finished in 2:17.30 to settle for second place behind Christopher.

It capped an eventful day for the sport after Swimfast's Maximillian Ang clinched the national under-14 men's 200m breaststroke record with a mark of 2:26.59 in the morning.

The SNAG represents the final opportunity for locally-based swimmers to qualify for June's SEA Games and will run till Sunday. Action resumes at 9am tomorrow.
