The Singapore South-east Asian Games Organising Committee (Singsoc) launched the Make-a-Nila programme yesterday to encourage community involvement in the 2015 Games to be hosted in the Republic.
Members of the public could sew and design personalised stuffed figurines of official mascot Nila, which will be given to all medallists at the June 5-16 Games. More than 4,500 Nilas will be required for distribution at the victory ceremonies at next year's edition of the biennial Games.
The initiative was officially launched by Minister of State (Prime Minister's Office and Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth) Sam Tan together with Singsoc chairman Lim Teck Yin and NTUC group chief executive Tan Kian Chew in attendance.
Said Tan: "We want to leave a legacy for Singapore through the SEA Games as a nation of sporting excellence and as a community of warm hospitality and also as a people of enduring competitive spirit."
Added Lim, who is also the chief executive of Sport Singapore: "The Make-a-NILA programme is a way for everyday people in different walks of life to be part of a medal winning experience."
The two-day event was held at the Kallang Wave Mall and ends on Sunday. The next roadshow will be held on Dec 13 at the Sengkang Sports Centre.
