SINGAPORE - A law to ensure that third party taxi booking apps operating here provide safe, reliable and efficient services was proposed in Parliament on Monday.

If passed, the bill will require app companies to register with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and adhere to a set of regulatory guidelines.

These will include making sure that only licensed taxis and cabbies use the app and that information on fares and surcharges are specified up front to commuters.

The proposed guidelines were announced by the LTA in November 2014.

Under them, flouting the rules could result in fines of up to $100,000 per contravention. In severe cases, the app companies could have their licences revoked.

Third-party cab booking apps have been around in Singapore for about three years.

Those currently available include GrabTaxi, Easy Taxi, Hailo, MoobiTaxi and Uber.
