SINGAPORE - The colours were bright, performances spectacular and happiness aplenty. Chinese New Year celebrations at River Hongbao in Marina Bay and Chinatown ushered in the Year of the Goat in grand style.
At the annual River Hongbao carnival, the show stealer was the heartstopping high-wire act by tightrope walker Adili Wuxor.
The 43-year-old from Xinjiang, China, danced, laid down and walked blindfolded while balancing on an 80m-long steel wire, no thicker than a bunch of four pencils (2.8cm).
The ends of the wire were 22m and 18m high. He performed on Wednesday at 7.15pm, 9.15pm and 11.15pm and will perform at 7.15pm and 9.15pm from Feb 19 to 22.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Office S. Iswaran attended the celebrations.
The Chinatown celebrations, organised by Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng Citizens Consultative Committee, featured performances by MediaCorp artistes and cultural groups. The night culminated in a rousing display of firecrackers and spectacular fireworks.
Among those who attended the event were Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Social and Family Development; Mr Sam Tan, mayor for Central Singapore District; and Dr Lily Neo, grassroots adviser and MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC.
