SINGAPORE - National servicemen deployed in the Home Team will be better integrated into actual police and Singapore Civil Defence Force operations.
Both the police and SCDF are currently studying how this can be done, amid a review of how they deploy NS men.
They are also studying ways to strengthen the links between the training and deployment of full-time national servicemen (NSFs) and their subsequent deployment as NSmen, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Teo Chee Hean on Thursday.
Speaking at a ceremony to re-open three Home Team NS clubhouses officially as well as present the Home Team NSman of the year award, Mr Teo said NS commanders will also be given more responsibility and ownership over the training of their units, supported by experienced former NSF trainers
More details of the police and SCDF review are being finalised and will be announced next year, he said.
NSmen are liable to be called up for a maximum of 40 days of National Service every year until the age of 50 years, for officers, or 40 years for others.
In his speech, Mr Teo also said a new Home Team NS clubhouse will be opened in Tampines by 2016, while the Sembawang clubhouse will be upgraded by mid next year.
The three clubhouses that were revamped and officially re-opened are at Balestier, Chinatown and Bukit Batok.
At the ceremony on Thursday, Mr Teo also launched a new Home Team NS logo to reflect "a re-invigorated association and a stronger sense of identity for Home Team Nsmen", he said.
Home Team NS was formed through a merger between the former Singapore Civil Defence Association for National Servicemen and the Singapore Police Association for National Servicemen in 2005. It currently has a membership base of 189,804.
Mr Teo on Thursday also presented the Home Team NSman of the year award to 10 NSmen from the police and SCDF. The award recognises their contributions based on attitude towards NS, job performance and contributions to Home Team NS committees and Home Team projects.
