SINGAPORE - To mark, Singapore's golden jubilee, next year's Chingay will be the biggest and grandest in its 42-year history, said organisers of the annual Chinese New Year procession.

Some 11,000 performers from 150 organisations will take part in the street parade, up from the usual 8,000 from 120 organisations of the past. Among next year's performers are 760 from 15 groups overseas.

About 500,000 Singapore households and Singaporeans will also be roped in to create one million flowers out of plastic bags for the parade, the theme of which is : We love Singapore(SG).

It will be a "parade of hearts" in which Singaporeans will express their love and best wishes for the Republic, said Mr Nah Juay Hng, who chairs the Chingay 2015 executive committee.

Chingay 2015 will also be longer, with festivities stretching from end-February to March.

Beside the main show at the F1 Pit Building on Feb 27 and 28, there will also be a street party along Orchard Road involving youths on March 1, said the People's Association, which organises the annual event.

Chingay will be brought to people's doorsteps, with the street parade and it's colourful floats going into five heartlands, covering a third of Singapore, said Mr Ang Hak Seng, PA's chief executive director.

"It is a gift from our people to our people. It is also a birthday present from many countries and cities to Singapore as we celebrate SG50," said Mr Ang.
