Provocative images that sear your mind, heart-breaking photos of grief and pain - these award-winning images taken by press photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers capture poignant moments of significant events of 2014.
Hailed as the Oscars of photo-journalism, The Straits Times will present the 58th annual World Press Photo exhibition at the National Museum of Singapore from Jan 29 to Feb 21, 2016.
Catch this international showcase of 145 prize-winning pictures, which has toured more than 100 cities in over 45 countries.
As part of the exhibition, there will be panel discussion and talks by these award-winning photographers. Note that the talks by Desmond Lim and Alphonsus Chern on Saturday (Feb 6) has been rescheduled to Sunday (Feb 14) at 1pm.

Ground Up: Telling stories from the grassroots by Sim Chi Yin

Join Sim Chi Yin, a documentary author based in China, for a morning of photos and discussion of her work documenting society from the grassroots. From petitioners sleeping rough and migrants living in Beijing's basements, to gold miners waiting for death in the remote mountains, Chi Yin has found ways to access communities on the fringe and then worked in an intimate, close-up way to tell their stories.

This lecture focuses on different aspects of story-telling, primarily one with long-term engagement. The workshop will use the example of contemporary photographic practice in Bangladesh, and using the tool of documentary photography will look at how different approaches can be used for such self-perused/self funded stories, which may deal with social, environmental and personal issues.
Who should attend: Participants can be of any age but must have a serious interest or commitment to photography. Those who are interested in long-term documentary photography projects and want to work on social, political, environmental issues or for a personal journey, should sign up.
