Makeover fit for a sultan

The historic Masjid Sultan, or Sultan Mosque, looks brand new again after a 15-month makeover. Take a look inside the prayer hall, and one's eyes are drawn to the majestic arches overhead, now highlighted by a striking green hue.

The mosque in Kampong Glam was one of the winners at the annual Urban Redevelopment Authority's Architectural Heritage Awards held yesterday.

The awards are given out to owners, architects, developers and contractors who have done sensitive and careful restoration work on heritage buildings and monuments.

Besides a fresh coat of paint for the interiors, the iconic domes of this Indo-Saracenic-styled mosque are also painted in bright gold - so that they shimmer in the sun.

Other work done included salvaging and repairing the original timber doors and windows, as well as adding more amenities.
