A bouncy castle provides some diversion for children during Eid al-Fitr in Douma, Syria. Douma, which is home to about 400,000 people, is the centre of the Eastern Ghouta rebel stronghold to the east of the capital. Syrian government forces have blockaded the region since 2013, often leading to food and medical shortages.

In Istanbul, taking a whirl on a fun fair ride is just one way for some people to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The holy month of Ramadan is a time when Muslims abstain from food and drink, among other things, from the "sahur” meal at sunrise to the “iftar” meal at sunset.

For Muslims in the North African enclave of Ceuta - a territory of Spain on the North African coast - Eid al-Fitr celebrations go on despite the sweltering heat. Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam and Muslims believe that it was during this month the Quran was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad.
