Snow falls in Tokyo for the first time this year, causing injuries and train delays across the capital.

Rooftops in Tokyo were covered in snow early yesterday morning, as the city experienced its first snow of the season amid cold temperatures, with snowfall reaching 6cm in downtown areas.

Heavy snow in northern and north-eastern Japan wreaked havoc on the nation's transportation systems, leaving 100 people injured with 30 taken to hospitals in Tokyo alone, The Japan Times reported.

The low pressure system responsible for the snow is expected to remain through today, and Japan's Land Ministry has urged people to prepare for heavy snow in the affected areas and refrain from going out unless necessary.
