Rain clouds hovered over central Singapore yesterday afternoon as showers poured down over large swathes of the island.

The rain gave momentary relief from the sweltering heat that has baked the country recently.

The weatherman forecast late last week that dry weather will prevail over Singapore and the surrounding region in the first week of the month. But there will be some respite, with short showers in the late mornings and early afternoons.
