Celebratory climbs

Indonesians yesterday celebrated their country's 70th Independence Day in various ways.

Some participated in a tree-climbing competition (above) to reach prizes placed on top of the palm tree logs. Others took part in offbeat events such as mud soccer, pillow-fighting games and garbage cart racing.

In Jakarta, many were invited to a ceremony at Merdeka Palace. Most of those invited were ordinary people, said State Secretary Pratikno.

"We invited everyday people, including farmers, fishermen and orphan children. We distributed 1,000 invitations. Only 30 per cent of (those) were for officials, while most of those invited were ordinary people," he was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.

President Joko Widodo officiated the ceremony, accompanied by Vice-President Jusuf Kalla. With them were First Lady Iriana Joko Widodo and Mrs Mufidah Jusuf Kalla.
