Bright lights, big city

Christmas, as the classic song by Andy Williams describes it, is "the most wonderful time of the year".

And in Tokyo, it is made extra special by the various winter illuminations on display during the festive season.

Among the most impressive ones in the city is Tokyo Midtown's Starlight Garden (above), which is particularly popular.

The massive light exhibit, comprising hundreds of thousands of digitally controlled LEDs, is located in a football field-size event space at the rear of the mixed development building in Akasaka.

The pulsating sea of brilliance adds to the magical, wintry atmosphere and is set to music that runs continuously from 5pm to 11pm daily until Christmas Day.
