Bath to make your blood run cold

Neither an air temperature of minus 4 deg C nor a water temperature of just 0.6 deg C stopped Mr Petr Voboril from enjoying his daily ritual yesterday.

The 58-year-old winter swimmer in Jablonec nad Nisou in North Bohemia, the Czech Republic, goes to the Mseno Dam for a morning bath before sunrise every day.

Mr Voboril had to use a saw and axe to cut a hole into 30cm-thick ice to get to the water, due to the unusually cold weather that has hit Europe in the past week.

The brutal cold front blowing in from Siberia has been dubbed "the Beast from the East" by the British, the "Siberian Bear" by the Dutch and the "Snow Cannon" by the Swedes.
