A race for a good cause

The action was in full flow at the Punggol Reservoir near Fernvale yesterday when Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong took this shot which he posted on his Facebook page, after attending the Ang Mo Kio GRC-Sengkang West Tree Planting Day.

The kayakers were competing to pick up as much rubbish from the waters as they could, as part of a race organised by youth grassroots groups in the area. This was a great chance for the participants to not only get close to nature, but also help clean up the river at the same time.

Mr Lee noted that the Sengkang-Punggol region has flourished over the past 10 years.

"The eco-town is home to many young families who enjoy ample outdoor recreational options," he wrote, adding that credit goes to the Housing Board, national water agency PUB, the National Parks Board and other agencies involved in planning and developing such infrastructure.

Mr Lee and MPs for Ang Mo Kio GRC and Sengkang West also planted tropical mangrove trees, api-api putih, along the river.
