Voter turnout is believed to have surged dramatically for this midterm elections. Most voters are concerned about the economy, the cost of living and the state of democracy in the country. The poll also signals a strong desire from voters for Congress to take a more forceful role in checking the presidency.

Prior to the election, Republicans held a 218-214 majority in the 435-seat House, which included two vacancies and one Republican-aligned independent. In the Senate, Republicans had held a 53-47 majority.

Now that Democrats have gained a majority in both chambers of Congress, this will give them the ability to thwart any legislation they oppose. But the majority does not enable them to enact legislation of their own.

There is also a lot a president can do without Congress. Trump has already tested the bounds of a president’s power by issuing expansive executive orders, including some that have been struck down by the courts, and waging war against Iran without congressional authorisation, according to Bloomberg.

Midterm election results can give aspiring presidential candidates hints on what voters may be looking for in the next presidential campaign, which will be held in 2028.

Why different media outlets are reporting different numbers

While television networks and news organisations frequently announce election winners, these are “projected winners” and not the official winners.

As there is no centralised data source in the US that indicates which states’ electoral votes have gone to which candidates, news organisations have traditionally resorted to making calls by relying on results aggregators, like Associated Press, or by basing them on their own algorithms, data analysis and/or panel of experts.
